{FIRST_NAME} {LAST_NAME},
Welcome to our second monthly newsletter. We are eager to bring you more tips, as well as some holiday cheer.
Twitter 101
Twitter is free social networking service that provides users with a microblogging platform to discuss what's happening in their lives. How small? Well, each tweet consist of only 140 characters. Because there is so little room to relay a message, Twitter users have come up with their own language. Here is a dictionary of Twitter symbols and terms for the Twittilliterate.
@: Put the “@” symbol before mentioning a fellow Twitter user in a tweet.
For example: "@SantaClaus is coming to town."
#: A “hashtag” is a fast, easy, and free way to mark content about a specific news item or event. Any word preceded by a “#” (a “hashtag”, according to Twitter) is treated specially, and noted as a content category in and of itself.
For example: "I hope @SantaClaus brings me what I wanted this year for Christmas #wishlist"
RT or Retweet: someone tweets something you like or agree with, you can retweet the same thing by putting a RT before the tweet. You can also add a comment to the tweet before the RT.
For example: "Agreed. RT @SantaClause I hope everyone has been nice, I'm getting my list ready."
DM or Direct Message: If you would like to send a personal tweet to a user that’s following you, sending them a direct message will ensure your privacy with them.
For example: "DM @SantaClaus I wish for peace on Earth this year."
Twitter Apps: There are numerous applications that can improve your Twitter experience. We recommend TweetDeck or HootSuite for your personal computer, Tweetie 2 for an iPhone, and UberTweeter or TwitterBerry for a BlackBerry.
